The Fibroid Centre

Fibroids are enlargemnets of the muscles of the womb, and they are very common. In fact more than 50% of women have them. In the majority of women they cuase no symptoms, but in some they can cause many problems. These include heavy and painful periods, bloody discharge in between the periods, infertility, miscarriage and pregnancy complications such as pre-term labour.

Many women with fibroids worry that they might need a hysterectomy to traet their condition. However, in recent years major advances have been made in this area, and now the majority of women with problems due to fibroids do not need a hyterectomy and could be treated with simpler methods. These include medications to shrink the fibroids, key-hole surgery (hysteroscopy) to remove them from the lining of the womb, open operation (myomectomy) to remove them from the wall of the womb, and X-ray techniques (fibroid embolisation) to shrink the fibroids.

Mr Masoud Afnan and Mr Khaldoun Sharif, Consultants at the Birmingham Fertility & Gynaecology Centre, are renowned experts in the diagnosis and treatment of fibroids. In particular, beacuse of their expertise in infertility, they use the latest techniques to preserve the womb, which is what many women want.
